Who is Opal Suchata Chuangsri — Thailand's first Miss World

The Makeup Artist Behind Thailand's First Miss World — Parisa Fellone & Opal Suchata Chuangsri

On 31 May 2025, Suchata "Opal" Chuangsri made history — becoming the first Thai woman ever to be crowned Miss World. For Thailand, it was a moment of genuine national pride. For me, it carried a particular weight. Three years earlier, I had been Opal's makeup artist at Miss Universe Thailand 2022 — the competition where, at just 18 years old, she placed third runner-up and won the special Miss Natural Beauty award. I was there at the very beginning of that journey. Watching it end with a Miss World crown was something I will never forget.

Who is Opal Suchata Chuangsri — Thailand's first Miss World

On 31 May 2025, Suchata "Opal" Chuangsri made history — becoming the first Thai woman ever to be crowned Miss World. For Thailand, it was a moment of genuine national pride. For me, it carried a particular weight. Three years earlier, I had been Opal's makeup artist at Miss Universe Thailand 2022 — the competition where, at just 18 years old, she placed third runner-up and won the special Miss Natural Beauty award. I was there at the very beginning of that journey. Watching it end with a Miss World crown was something I will never forget.

Opal is 21 years old, from Phuket, and studying International Relations at Thammasat University in Bangkok. She speaks Thai, English and Chinese fluently — a detail that reflects both her international schooling and the kind of poise that reads effortlessly on a world stage.

Before Miss World 2025, she had already held the Miss Universe Thailand 2024 title and placed as third runner-up at Miss Universe 2024 in Mexico City. She is also the founder of "Opal For Her" — a breast health awareness campaign born from her own experience of undergoing surgery to remove a tumour at age 16. That combination of beauty, intelligence, resilience and purpose is precisely what made her compelling to the Miss World judges — and to anyone who has had the privilege of working with her.

When she was crowned on 31 May 2025 in Hyderabad, she did not just win a competition. She made history for every Thai woman who had ever competed on a world stage — and for a country whose beauty industry has long deserved the global recognition it is now beginning to receive.

Working with Opal — behind the photoshoot

Working with Opal — behind the photoshoot

I had the privilege of working with Opal on a photoshoot before her international journey began. What strikes you first — before you have even opened your kit — is her skin. It is genuinely extraordinary: even, luminous, with a natural translucency that most makeup artists spend an entire session trying to recreate on someone else.

A face like Opal's does not need to be transformed. It needs to be honoured. The work is about precision and restraint — knowing what to add and, equally, what to leave alone. Her features have a natural harmony that overcorrecting would diminish. The goal is to make the camera see what the eye already sees standing in front of her.

Working with someone at this level is also a reminder that great makeup is collaborative. Opal knows her face. She knows which angles she photographs best at, which colours work with her skin, and what she wants the image to say. That self-knowledge — rare in someone so young — makes the artist's job simultaneously easier and more demanding. There is no hiding behind transformation. You are working in the service of something that is already excellent.

The T-Beauty look that defines Thailand's finest

The T-Beauty look that defines Thailand's finest

The aesthetic I reached for with Opal is what I would call the purest expression of T-Beauty — Thailand's emerging makeup philosophy that prioritises a second-skin, dewy base, soft warmth in the eyes, and a natural luminosity that photographs as well as it looks in person.

T-Beauty does not chase Western full-coverage looks or the high-drama Korean techniques that have dominated Asian beauty content for the past decade. It is something more genuinely Thai — rooted in the particular quality of light in Southeast Asia, designed for warm skin tones, and built to survive the heat and humidity that is simply a fact of life in this part of the world.

For the skin: a flawlessly matched, lightweight foundation layered over a hydrating primer. Coverage where the camera needs it — evening out any unevenness — without a single millimetre of unnecessary product. Set with the finest translucent powder only in the areas that will catch flash most aggressively. The rest of the skin breathes, glows, and reads as genuinely alive on camera.

For the eyes: soft, warm tones that deepen the natural eye shape without dramatising it. A precise, fine liner to define without hardening. Lashes that add definition at the root without the artificial weight of something overtly theatrical.

For the lips: a tone that harmonises with her warm, golden Thai skin — never too cool, never too muted. Something that reads natural at close range and vivid on camera.

What pageant skin preparation actually looks like

What pageant skin preparation actually looks like

One of the things people ask me most often after high-profile shoots and events is: what did the skin preparation look like? The answer is always less dramatic than people expect.

The preparation for photographic and editorial work begins well before the session. A consistent skincare routine in the weeks leading up to the shoot. No new products. Excellent hydration — both topically and internally. A good night's sleep. When the skin is genuinely healthy, the makeup work on the day becomes almost effortless. You are working with the skin, not trying to compensate for it.

On the day itself: a thorough but gentle cleanse. A hydrating serum applied and fully absorbed before any base product. A lightweight moisturiser. A primer chosen specifically for the skin type and the conditions of the shoot — heat, lighting, duration. Then foundation, built slowly in thin layers. Concealer last, not first. Setting with absolute restraint.

The difference between a good result and an extraordinary one — at this level — is almost always in the preparation, not the products. The most expensive foundation in the world cannot substitute for a well-rested, well-hydrated face.

What this moment means for Thai beauty

What this moment means for Thai beauty

Opal's victory as Miss World 2025 — the first Thai woman to claim the title in the pageant's 72-year history — is not just a sporting achievement for beauty pageants. It is a signal to the global beauty industry that Thai aesthetics, Thai technique, and Thai beauty standards are worth paying attention to.

Thailand's makeup artists, skin specialists and beauty professionals have been working at the highest level for decades — serving international clients, training students from across Southeast Asia, and developing their own aesthetic vocabulary. Opal's win on a world stage gives that work the visibility it deserves.

For anyone looking to learn makeup in Bangkok right now, there has never been a more exciting moment to engage with Thai beauty. The techniques, the philosophy, the products — they are all here, they are all world-class, and they are now visible to the entire world.

Opal carried Thailand's beauty tradition onto the largest stage in the world. The rest of us — the artists, the teachers, the students — carry it forward every day in the studio, the classroom and the photoshoot.
